Flexion-Distraction Therapy

Experience safe, gentle relief from bulging or herniated discs with Flexion-Distraction therapy, a specialized technique that uses a motorized table to distract and decompress the spine. By reducing pressure on nerves and improving joint mobility, this approach can help you potentially avoid surgery.

  • Targets disc-related issues to relieve pain and pressure
  • Uses gentle flexion to decompress and realign the spine
  • Whereas other spinal distraction therapies, like inversion tables, distract the entire spine, Flexion-Distraction therapy treats the affected area only, making it safer and gentler than other spinal distraction therapies.

What is Flexion-Distraction Therapy and Drop-Table Adjusting

Flexion-Distraction therapy utilizes a motorized table that flexes down and returns to horizontal, repeatedly. The patient lays facedown on the table. Each time the lower half of the table flexes away, towards the floor, the pelvis and hips flex with it, causing footwards distraction of the lumbar vertebrae. The flexion-distraction chiropractor’s hand applies headwards distraction.

The Flexion-Distraction table is also a drop-table. At Bozeman Chiropractic, our Flexion-Distraction table has a drop-piece that assists the doctor when manually adjusting the pelvis.

How Does It Work?

Targeted Distraction: The doctor places their hand just above the affected disc, guiding the flexion motion to decompress the vertebral joints below the contact.

Disc Decompression: This gentle stretch helps retract the “jelly-like” nucleus pulposus of bulging or herniated discs, reducing pressure on impinged nerves.

Safe & Gentle Positioning: Unlike inversion tables, Flexion-Distraction doesn’t require extreme or inverted angles, making it a comfortable option for most patients.

Recommended for Disc Issues

Many osteopathic surgeons suggest Flexion-Distraction therapy as a first-line treatment for pain or dysfunction caused by bulging or herniated discs. By relieving nerve pressure and improving joint mobility, this approach may help you avoid more invasive treatments, including surgery.

Drop-Table Adjusting

Flexion-distraction tables often feature a drop piece for adjusting the pelvis. This method:

Uses Less Force: The drop piece allows a quick, gentle thrust.

Ensures Safety & Efficacy: It effectively realigns the sacroiliac (SI) joint without placing undue stress on the body.
